Shakopee Facility
Rahr’s Shakopee production facility annually produces 460,000 MT of malt, making it among the largest single-site malt production facilities in the world. The campus consists of six individual malthouses, four Saladin units and two towers. The original malthouse was constructed in 1936 with new malt houses added in 1952, 1975, 1980, 1994 and 2016.
Each malthouse continues to be upgraded with the latest in equipment and process control, assuring complete customer satisfaction. Our Shakopee campus also includes a 20,000 square foot research brewery and technical center to offer a full array of support and services to our customers. Our barley laboratory evaluates our North American crops and assures us that only the finest barley is used for our production. We also operate a pilot malting facility that malts over 1000 samples a year for process improvement and crop evaluation purposes.
Our malt production is a perfect blend of art and science – efficient and technologically advanced. The state-of-the-art facility is fully automated with the latest in control technology. Two major North American rail carriers, the Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific, service this site.
The Shakopee site also serves as the headquarters for Rahr Malting Co.® It is an FSSC 22000 registered facility.
